Season 3 seems to degrade his character growth, but did it? He's faced with a fast growing 11, who is by all account in genuine love with Mike, and Hopper doesn't know how to deal with this. I'm not surprised by this, I imagine Hopper has a negative self image, and He's gone Cold Turkey in trying to be a father again. He reveals that he feels he's just going to break every good thing that happens to him. Of course then he's forced to deal with the Upside down for a season while 11 goes on her own adventure, only reuniting at the end and reconciling with each other.

He manages to mangle his relationship with her pretty badly due to an over protective nature(Back up by justified Concerns), and not being able to handle a teen girl. He's at a loss for how to handle 11, who has the added complication of being a powerful Psychic. Hopper never got this far with Sarah and then he had 4 years in which his fathering skill got rusty. Right in time for Her to hit that rebellious stage. 11 is already 12 years old when Hopper adopts her. He had 6-7 years with his Daughter Sarah before she was taken from him by Cancer. this is where i find him to become the most interesting. Shortly afterwards he become an adopted father to 11. Then Shit gets real, and he is force to become the competent Officer he was in the big city and save Will from another dimension. He ends up spending the next 4 years in a Slump and depressed more or less just. He lost his daughter and then divorced his wife. I can understand that However i dont think his behavior is far removed from what a real dad might be like in his situation. Monsters aside, Jim becoming a father again is one of my favorite story arcs, because he gets it so wrong while trying to do right.Ī lot of people dont like what was done to Hopper in Season 3.
